Updated: Phillies (almost) Sign Ryan Madson to 4 Year $44MM Deal

Updated:  Looks like the deal in in jeopardy of falling through.  I’d still be surprised if the Phillies don’t get a deal done with Madson.

The Phillies signed Ryan Madson to a four year deal late Tuesday night.  The deal will pay Madson $44 Million dollars over those four years so obviously they are expecting him to be their closer.  This move was pretty much expected, and most likely means that Brad Lidge, the Phillies former closer who missed most of 2011 due to injuries will be on a new team in 2012.

Madson is on the short list of top tier NL closers going into 2012.  Just off the top of my head I probably have Craig Kimbrell ATL  in the # 1 spot.  With Ryan Madson PHI, Brian Wilson SFG, Joel Hanraham PIT, John Axford MIL, J.J. Putz ARZ and Drew Storen WAS kind of all in a logjam behind him.
